Guadalupe River Park & Gardens announces its latest addition!
Check out the newest addition to the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens! After months of construction, the newest City of San Jose Community Garden is ready to open November 5th, 2008. The Guadalupe Community Garden is one of 19 community gardens - occupying approximately 37 acres of land - operated by the City of San Jose for the benefit of its residents. The Community Gardening Program started in 1977. The first garden, Mi Tierra, was located on a five-acre parcel that had been a City tree nursery. Each garden manages their own day-to-day operations with a volunteer staff, including managers, assistant managers and secretary/ treasurers. The majority of the gardens are older than 15 years. Guadalupe Community Garden consists of 33 plots, including four that are raised for easy accessibility. It is a beautiful facility, with raised beds, a tool shed and a nice covered area for garden workshops and gatherings. Right now, it will have a slow start due to the time of year, but come spring, watch us grow!! Click here to learn more about the community garden.

Volunteer Profiles

Guadalupe River Park Conservancy Board Member: Ken Yeager
In June 2006 Ken was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, representing District 4, after serving six years on the San Jose City Council representing Willow Glen and the Rose Garden areas. As a Council member, Ken took an active leadership role in breathing life into the all-but-forgotten trail system in San Jose. At his urging, the City created a new trails coordinator position. Prior to his election to the Council, Ken was a faculty member in the Department of Political Science, San Jose State University and served as a Trustee of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Board from 1992-2000. He earned his undergraduate degree from San Jose State, and holds three graduate degrees, including a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford University. He has run more than 27 marathons and looks forward to planning and running races in GRP&G.

Meet Pat Roesch
In January 2004, Pat attended one of our annual Volunteer Coffees and immediately joined our volunteer group. She is now a regular volunteer at the Heritage Rose Garden every Wednesday. Pat has been married for 42 years and has two sons and a new grandchild. She enjoys reading historic novels, gardening, biking and has run a few marathons.
