Team Building and Community Service Opportunities
April is always a popular month for corporate work groups to lend assistance in Guadalupe Gardens. Applied Materials kicked off the month, sending 60 people out on a beautiful Saturday morning. The volunteers planted sunflower seeds, removed thistle plants from the orchard, spread mulch and installed poles in the Heritage Rose Garden, and spruced up the Courtyard Demonstration and Taylor St. Rock Gardens. We greatly appreciate Applied Materials, Cisco, Deloitte, Intel and other companies for their generous volunteer programs!

Working together to make a difference in the community is a great way to build team spirit and demonstrate the values of your organization. Year-round outdoor activities provide fresh air and exercise as well as camaraderie! Contact Lucy at 408-298-7657 for more information.

Maximize the magic and minimize the chores to bring out the green thumb in your kids! Warm spring days are a perfect time to celebrate the season with Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens and learn how flowers are grown from seeds, soil and the sun.  Decorate your own clay pots and plant flower seeds to take home, and watch them grow.  We will take a nature walk through the Guadalupe Heritage Rose Garden and use our senses to see good bugs and bad bugs and smell beautiful flowers.  See if you can spot wild flowers in the park and learn their names.  Come celebrate this beautiful time of year and inspire the little gardener within your children!

Spring in Guadalupe Gardens -- Volunteers Needed!
On Saturday, April 25, 2009 we will be having our annual Spring in Guadalupe Gardens festival from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Plant sales and garden tours are a mainstay of this annual event. There will be children's activities, tours of the Heritage Rose Garden, musical entertainment and food. The event will take place in the area of Guadalupe Gardens between Coleman Avenue and Taylor Street.

To sign up please connect to: http://www.grpg.org/SGG/SGGVolunteers.html no later than Monday, April 13. We will need about 150 volunteers for this event, and we will confirm participation on a first come first serve basis. Volunteers should be 16+ years of age. Volunteers under 18 will need a release form signed by a parent/guardian.

Four different volunteer shifts are available from 7:00 am- 5:00 pm. The first and last shifts are for set up and tear down. Groups are welcome for these shifts. Tasks for the 9:30-3:00 shifts may include: helping with children activities, food booth sales, barbecuing, raffle ticket sales, compost giveaway, answering phones, plant/merchandise sales, surveys, guarding trail entrances and other tasks as needed.

This is an exciting event for all garden enthusiasts. I hope you will be a part of it!

Volunteer Profiles

Guadalupe River Park Conservancy Board Member: Jerry Silva
After finishing college at Sacramento State, Jerry leapt right into the world of finance auditing, stringing together a series of awards and commendations.  After a stint in Arizona, Jerry returned to California where he became the City of SJ's auditor, pioneering the use of risk assessment in all of the City's departments.  Jerry's knowledge of City workings, as well as his close residency to the GRPG make him an ideal Board member.  In his spare time he enjoys golfing and adjusting to retirement.

Meet Mike Hammes
Mike has participated in different programs at Guadalupe River Park Conservancy since January 2006. He was attracted to the park after reading an article about mammoth fossils found on the Guadalupe River. You can find him at the Visitor & Education Center on Mondays entering information in the database and giving information about the park to visitors, as well as helping us with different community events.

Mike is retired from Hewlett Packard after working 26 years as a software engineer. His family moved from Minnesota when he was five years old and he has lived in Cupertino for the last 22 years. Mike enjoys hiking and biking and is a Giants fan.  He also volunteers at other non-profit organizations during the weekend.

We really appreciate Mike’s many and varied contributions to our organization.
