Trail Update

Bad news - Union Pacific Railroad didn’t complete the signal work needed to finish the trestle replacement project so the trail detour between Julian St and Coleman Ave will remain in place for another year.

Good news – the paving project between Hwy. 880 and Gold St. will begin in the spring. Unfortunately, the trail will be closed for about a year during the paving, installation of trail markers, and construction of entry plazas but will connect downtown to Alviso when the trail re-opens.

Rosarians From Down Under

GRPC Education Coordinator Linda McCabe invited Andrew and Tilley Govanstone to stop in San Jose during their international book tour. The Govanstones researched the women who were namesakes for fellow Australian Alister Clark’s hybridized roses. The Govanstones were delighted to discover that our Heritage Rose Garden has 15 Alister Clark roses, the largest collection outside Australia, including two that aren’t currently found in their homeland.

Community Garden Expands

Crews have started working on the recycled water pipeline extension on Walnut St. that will allow for the expansion of Guadalupe Community Garden. Funded by federal stimulus grant to South Bay Water Recycling, this second phase adds forty-five 5’x30’ plots to the existing 33 beds. There are over 100 people on the wait list for this garden; 45 lucky people should have access to their plots by next April.

Orchard Update

My name is Stephanie Lind, and I am joining the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy as a Silicon Valley HealthCorps Member for the 2010-11 year.  My role will be to help manage and improve the condition of the Historic Orchard and the Community Garden and to connect adults and children to our gardens through exciting and educational classes, field trips, volunteer opportunities, and workshops.

I am delighted to present the new Orchard Update section of Guadalupe River Park Conservancy’s e-newsletter.  In this new section, I will keep you informed about the previous month’s events and all of the volunteer opportunities, projects and workshops that will be happening in the Historic Orchard.

The Historic Orchard already serves as a site for the Dig In and the Seasons & Senses field trips, where elementary school children visit the orchard to learn about pollinators, how trees change throughout the seasons, and the history of the Santa Clara Valley.  A variety of seasonal adult classes, including dormant pruning and tree planting classes, are also held in the Historic Orchard.

Orchard Update
November’s Updates:

  • An enthusiastic Orchard Management Team formed in October to address the serious health challenges that the Historic Orchard faces, including a variety of diseases and pests.

Park Ranger Mike Peasland photographed a Sturgeon that was stranded in a pool in the Guadalupe River last week. Sturgeons are bottom feeders that can grow to twenty feet and live for 100 years. The six-foot-long fish was freed by Friday’s storm.
