Save the Date

Saturday, October 9, 2010
10 AM to 4 PM
Guadalupe River Park / Discovery Meadow, San Jose

FREE!
A bright orange pumpkin patch and a fanciful scarecrow display will welcome you to the park. We’ll have varieties of specialty apples to taste, fresh pressed apple cider, and entertainment by popular children’s entertainers Zun Zun, Andy Z and many more. There will be tons of free and low-cost activities for children, including pumpkin decorating, bounce houses, and environmental education activities.

We need lots of help to make Pumpkins in the Park a success.  Volunteers staff every area and position from setting up, volunteer registration, children’s activities, food and beverage sales, surveys, bounce house, apple cider pressing and much more.  We are hoping that you will be able to assist us and be a part of making this event enjoyable for all who attend. To sign up in your preferred shift, please click on the link below. Contact Lucy Perez at lucy@grpg.org or 408-298-7657 for more details. http://www.grpg.org/PIP.shtml

Trail Updates
Trail Count 2010 - The City of San Jose’s 4th annual trail count will take place on Wednesday, September 15th from 7am - 7pm. We’re looking for volunteers to help count Guadalupe River Trail users; please let Lucy@grpg.org know if you are available. These are the shifts: 7-9 AM, 9-11 AM, 11 AM - 1 PM, 1-3 PM, 3-5 PM, and 5-7 PM.

Detour - The detour between Coleman Ave. and Julian St. remains in effect through the fall while the railroad trestle is being replaced. A brief project to extend recycled water to the airport will cause a temporary narrowing - but not closure - of the trail under Hwy. 880.

Italian Family Festa

GRPC Board President Jodi Starbird (third from left) joined the ribbon cutting last weekend for the Italian American Heritage Foundation’s 30th annual Festa, which attracted over 30,000 people to the Confluence area of Guadalupe River Park.  We look forward to many more years of Festa in the park!

Art in the Park
A Floating World, an installation by artists Robin Lasser & Marguerite Perret, is a group of five "tent encampment" sculptures that will be cantilevered off the Guadalupe River Park overpass on the south side of San Fernando Street. The interactive piece will be in place from August to November. More info.

Roses, Roses, Roses!
Fall is a great time to enjoy roses at the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy and with the help of a grant from Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, and the efforts of the Heritage Rose Garden curator, Jill Perry, the GRPC staff and HRG volunteers, we have been working hard creating interpretive signage for the rose garden, updating the Catalog of Roses (on our website) and soon you’ll see a new brochure with information about the history of the garden and a self guided tour. We also have more pod casts planned to further enhance your Heritage Rose Garden visit. Check out the existing pod casts on the website, and links to other sites. This section is still changing and growing so come back often!

Meet volunteer Richard Tiede
Richard was born in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Wisconsin College with a bachelor’s degree in industrial education.  Richard eventually made his way to Seattle, where he worked for Boeing for four years.  In 1980 he moved to San Jose and worked in high-tech until he retired in 2007. Richard is married to Bracey Tiede, a member of our Board of Directors.  He started volunteering at our Spring Festival in 1997.  In addition to continuing to help at our community events, Richard has repaired the irrigation system at our office building and in the Historic Orchard and has also helped supervise volunteer groups maintaining areas such as the Rock Garden on Taylor Street. Richard is a member of California Native Plant Society and Mediterranean Garden Society and is quick to share his knowledge and love of plants. We are so fortunate that Richard joined our volunteer team. Thanks, Richard, for your generous spirit and your dedication to the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens.
