Some of these items have
shipping costs. Shipping costs can be avoided by visiting us at
our office at 438 Coleman Ave., San Jose, CA 95125. At this time,
we can only sell one item at a time, (we do not have "shopping cart"
capabilities yet) so you may need to do multiple transactions to acquire
multiple items. We can also take credit card (Mastercard & Visa) orders over the
phone, just call 408-298-7657. Some of the items may
require a follow up call from us. For instance, if you would like
to adopt a rose, go ahead and pay on-line below, but then we'll follow
up with you to talk about which rose you want, and what you would like
your inscription to say. All orders that require shipping will be
sent via USPS within two business days of the order.

Catalyst for Change

If you want to save the shipping fee, come on down to our visitor center!
Catalyst for Change: A History of Civic Plazas in San Jose, chronicles San Jose's seats of government from the colonial period, up to and including the new complex on East Santa Clara Street. The book details the seven buildings that have served as San Jose's city hall from pueblo days, while providing an overview of city government itself, from the Spanish period to the mid-twentieth century. The seven-square-block neighborhood, the site of the new Civic Plaza, had a rich history dating from the mid-nineteenth century, and was home to many of San Jose's early public officials, entrepreneurs and immigrants. This history is also included in Catalyst, along with the neighborhood's close social and economic ties to San Jose State University, located in Washington Square to the south. The impact of growth and industry on the neighborhood, along with the subsequent deterioration which characterized most of San Jose's downtown in the 1970s and 1980s, is also recounted. Written by Historian Dolores Mellon, this book provides new insight into the history of Civic Plazas in San Jose and the Civic Plaza neighborhood, while placing the new City Hall in this context. |
