Black Phoebe

(Sayornis nigricans)

The Black Phoebe prefers moist habitats at low elevations, and often migrates to suburban and urban areas near waterways during the cold winter months. Its body is about six inches in length, with a black—colored head and back and a white underbelly. It can gracefully snatch insects in the air, but also forages for plant foliage on the ground and aquatic insects on the water's surface.

Fun Fact
Black Phoebes lurk on low perches and rocks to spy insects flying nearby or skimming the water.
