Extremely territorial, the California Towhee aggressively defends its territory in the chaparral near parks, gardens, and woodlands. It has brown upperparts and light brown underparts, and ranges in size from 8.5 to 10 inches. Look for the California Towhee scouring the ground around shrubs for berries, seeds, and insects.
Fun Fact California Towhees often mate for life. A bird separated from its partner will squeal from its perch. When the pair reunites, the birds bob their bodies in unison to reaffirm their partnership.
