Gopher Snakes are yellowish brown, with dark, diamond—shaped markings, and can grow over 2 meters in length. Like California Kingsnakes, Gopher Snakes are constrictors, which squeeze their prey in order to kill it. They feed on mammals, birds, and occasionally lizards. Gopher Snakes play an important role in controlling rodent populations.
Fun Fact When disturbed or attacked by a predator, a Gopher Snake will flatten its head to look wider, hissing loudly and rapidly shaking its tail.
