Grey Hairstreak

Strymon melinus

The grey hairstreak is identified by a tail on the hindwings. The upperside is blue-gray with a large red spot near the tail. In the spring and fall the underside is dark gray, and in the summer it is a paler gray. Relatively straight postmedian line is white, bordered with orange on the inside edge.

Fun Fact
An "eye spot" of red or blue usually accompanies the tails. This tail is thought to function as a protective device that fools predators into thinking it is the antennae or head of the butterfly.
