An adaptable, generalist species, the Mountain Lion is found in most American habitat types. Secretive and solitary by nature, the cougar is most active at night, dawn, and dusk. Primary food sources include deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep. It will also hunt species as small as insects and rodents. This cat prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but can also live in open areas. It is reclusive and usually avoids people.
Fun Fact The Mountain Lion is more closely related genetically to smaller felines, including the domestic cat, than to any subspecies of lion.
