Raccoon

(Procyon lotor)

Well adapted to urban areas, raccoon are more numerous in cities than in the wild. Raccoons range from 20—40 inches long, and weigh between 12 and 38 lbs. Raccoon tracks are very distinctive; their hind foot is long and narrow, resembling a human foot, while their front paw is hand—like, with toes that are long and well separated. Raccoons make a variety of vocal sounds, like chirps, growls, and purrs.

Fun Fact
Raccoons, especially males, are territorial. Adult males may occupy areas of 3 to 20 square miles; females have a much smaller territory of 1 to 6 square miles.
