The Ring-billed Gull is a medium-sized gull. The head, neck and underparts are white and the relatively short bill is yellow with a dark ring. Their breeding habitat is near lakes, rivers or the coast in Canada and the northern United States. These birds are opportunistic and have adapted well to taking food discarded or even left unattended by people.
Fun Fact Migrating Ring-billed Gulls apparently use a built-in compass to navigate. When tested at only two days of age, chicks showed a preference for magnetic bearings that would take them in the appropriate direction for their fall migration. The gulls also rely on landmarks and high-altitude winds to provide directional cues.
