Steelhead Rainbow Trout

(Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Rainbow Trout are dark—olive in color, white on the undersides with black speckles and a red stripe that runs alongside their body. Mature adults weigh between 8 and 55 lbs. They only live in cool waters, preferring shady spots with lots of vegetation.

Fun Fact
While all trout are born in the graveled bottoms of rivers and streams, not all spend their lives in freshwater. The anadromous species of rainbow trout is the steelhead rainbow trout that migrates to the ocean to mature and returns to freshwater to spawn. They spawn multiple times before they die.
