White—crowned Sparrow

(Zonotrichia leucophrys)

With bold black and white stripes atop its head, the White—crowned Sparrow perches like a king atop willows, cottonwoods, and other trees in the riparian corridor. With its tiny, orang—pink bill, it scratches the ground to uncover insects and seeds.

Fun Fact
Although occasionally it builds nests in shrubs or small trees, the White—crowned Sparrow usually nests on the ground.
